Video: The Basics

I've been wanting to watch Raya and the Last Dragon on 4K for some time. It's good to see Disney movies on 4K.
One thing I do like about this movie is that is a very filmic look. The colors are very natural and not overdone, surprising for an animated movie. However, in turn, doesn't really give that 4K HDR POP.
IMDB claims that it's a 4KDI, but to me, this doesn't look like a typical 4K resolution. To me, it looks soft compared to a real 4KDI. It would make sense to me if this is actually upscaled to 4K. The reason I say that is because there's an up or downscale ringing around objects. With minor edge enhancement used also, this is one area which I don't particularly like.
The Hobbit also claims to be 4KDI and that doesn't look 4K either IMO. Are companies upscaling to 4K, and calling it a 4KDI? I don't know, but to my eyes, it looks more like 2K.
The bit-rate is also too low IMO. Scenes fading from one to the next have minor artifacts in them. There's also minor noise in the background of some shots. I checked the bit-rate and it's low, 40 to 50 Mbps, this confirms what I'm seeing is correct. Disney needs to use 100 GB discs to get the best out of the 4K format in my opinion, and I hope that they decide to do that in the future.
One last thing that I didn't like is the bit-depth. I could make out minor banding, and bit depth issues on faces. This would be cleared up with Dolby Vision or a $12'000 video processor, which is probably out of reach for most people. Dolby Vision would be nice, and I'd like to see Disney to start using it.
Most of you will think, must be a bad disc right? No, it's honestly not, it's just small things creeping in. At times the movie can look really nice but is let down these small issues that I see. One other thing I'll say is, with its realistic approach it doesn't look punchy enough for me, I respect the look, but it's almost too natural looking. I'd like an animated cartoon to really show off with colors, but this one holds back. It doesn't really give me that 4K POP!
Overall, it's an okay-looking 4K disc, I'd say average. It doesn't really excel at anything, it just looks okay.

Audio: The Basics

The audio for Raya is Dolby Atmos, and from my experience, Disney doesn't typically have great-sounding discs. This one, however, is excellent.
The dialogue for Raya is perfectly balanced and clear. Disney has also turned their movies up in volume lately. Typically I'd have to raise the volume around 10db, I only raised it 2 for this movie.
The use of Dolby Atmos is excellent, wind rain, storms all sound great. Sounds actually move through the room, through the middle, and above, it's very good. Surround sound is equally as good, with plenty coming from the back speakers, and supports the Atmos sound perfectly.
I rip in Disney for not having bass in their movies, but this has plenty, it goes deep too. I'm a fan.
Overall, it's a gorgeous-sounding movie and really shows off how good Atmos is. If you still haven't heard Dolby Atmos, this is a really good family movie to show it off.
Recommended.
