Story: The Basics
Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad. Determined to save their home (not to mention his own), Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona to be Farquaad's bride, with the help of a wisecracking donkey. Rescuing the Princess may be small compared to her deep, dark secret.
Directors: Andrew Adamson, Vicky Jenson
Writers: Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman, Roger S.H. Schulman, Cody Cameron, Chris Miller
Starring: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow, Vincent Cassel, Chris Miller

Video: The Basics
First impressions are a little on the poor side. The first scene has some pretty nasty banding. Shrek is a 2001 movie, and this suggests to me one thing, 8-bit color. 10 and 12-bit color doesn't typically have banding lines, so it must be 8-bit. Anyway, let's dive in and see.
The resolution is a little soft, I can't confirm this but it looks to be about 720p. Antialiasing artifacts are visible and it looks a little rough to be honest. It looks a little like DVD used to, not really a fan of this. I know it's old tech, but it really hasn't aged that well.
The color is green and fun. But, I don't think it makes use of any HDR. HDR wasn't even invented back then, and even though it's now placed into an HDR wrapper, it's not real HDR.
Some edge is visible on the sides of faces and objects. I assume that the resolution was so low that they had to increase the sharpness in some way. It's a small amount, and may not be noticeable on non-OLED displays because of blooming and blurring.
Black level detail is slightly inconsistent. Later scenes having great black-level detail and others looking potentially crushed or right on edge.
Overall? Tough for me to place a score for this one consider the source material is quite poor. This is certainly the best Shrek has looked, and apart from its age, the transfer is okay. If I'm watching any version then it's the 4K, but I don't recommend it for its picture quality. Considering that this is a great movie I still recommend the movie itself, it's still one of the best-animated movies I've seen, and 4K just makes it the best it can be. But, I always intend on giving my honest opinions in my reviews, it is what it is.
VIDEO SCORE: 3.5 OUT OF 5
THE BASICS: HASN'T AGED THAT WELL
Audio: The Basics
Shrek 4K comes with a DTS:X upgrade, and wow! it's good. This is the reason to upgrade!
Dialogue is clean and well recorded. It's mixed a hair low, but I think it's fine. I'm happy with this.
The use of DTS:X height speakers is excellent. Actually, the use of surround sound is excellent also. Why aren't all animated movies mixed like this? I've missed this type of audio. Sound comes from above, from behind, and around, this is excellent sound.
There's some nice bass punch too, nothing crazy but there's some. Again, impressive for an animated movie.
Overall, great sound and an excellent DTS:X upgrade. This is well worth the upgrade, very good, and highly recommended. Great sound for a great movie!
AUDIO SCORE: 4.5 OUT OF 5
