Video: The Basics
My first impressions are one of amazement. No edge, super clean, dynamic, but looks to be low on the bit rate. However, how's the whole disc look?
The movie is split into chapters, which is nice, reminds me of a Quentin Tarantino movie. Chapter One is the best looking of all the chapters. It does have minor bit-rate issues, but for the most part, it's extremely good. However, there are 2 shots with edge enhancement, I assume that this was done back in the day with really poor cameras. They are really poor quality film shots, film dupes? I'm not sure, but they look really bad. A couple of the chapter screens also have an edgy look in the fonts. There are also a couple of shots with ringing in them, but that's it. Apart from those little things, the disc is basically flawless, regarding edge enhancement and ringing. It's excellent.
The biggest thing for me is film quality consistent. I typically say film grain consistency, which is also an issue, but this about the quality of the original film. Like I've said, chapter 1 is very good and quite consistent. The later chapters are much poorer in film quality. 3rd or 4th generation film? Dupes? I'm not sure, but the difference between shots is something I really dislike, and it is heavy in this movie.
The movie also has very heavy film grain, and this requires much more bit-rate to encode and still get very good quality with. IMO, the bit-rate is too low for film grain this heavy. This movie needs an average bit-rate of 90+ Mbps, unfortunately, it got 50 to 60 Mbps. This is a 100 GB disc, so for me, there's no excuse for the bit-rate being this low. They could have got bit-rates much higher and should have been. You can't have film grain this heavy and only set the average bit-rate to 55 Mbps, that can't happen IMO. Film grain does turn into noise on many shots, especially those with heavy and blurry film grain. I'm a bit disappointed with this. The film quality I can accept because it's an old movie, but the bit-rate being too low? That's a decision that's been made in 2021, why is it this low? I'm going to try and contact Universal Studios about this because apart from this they did everything right. I think it's a little bit of a shame TBH.
With all that said, the shots that look good, which are many look incredible. Quite a few shots made my jaw drop, with great color and brightness.
Overall? At times it is a great-looking movie but suffers from consistency issues that I can't ignore. The bit-rate is too low for film grain this heavy, the encoders should have known that.
It's a great movie and I still recommend it even with all its consistency issues. It's quite simply a classic movie that has never looked better.
VIDEO SCORE: 4 OUT OF 5
THE BASICS: OCCASIONALLY GREAT / CONSISTENCY ISSUES
Audio: The Basics
The music, ah that's where I've heard it before, oh this is a classic! The sound is DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.
The dialogue is clear and balanced quite well. If anything it's leaning towards low dialogue volume, but not by much and I think it's fine.
The music is nice, and I had no idea it was from this movie, pretty cool. I enjoyed it.
AUDIO SCORE: 4 OUT OF 5
THE BASICS: DECENT
HOW I REVIEW THE BASICS
I just write what I see, nothing super in-depth; just what I see. Do I see noise in the blacks? Edge enhancement? Digital Issues? Scaling Problem? I will let you know if I see any errors in the discs, and explain how good they really look. Same with the audio; a very simple review method. I have no agenda other than finding and reporting what I see and hear. My reviews will not get a reference certificate unless it's flawless, and I will not be giving out 5/5 video/audio without merit. I'm going to keep this really simple, and I hope you enjoy that side of my Reviews. Thank you.
